Tig Barksdale, Jamar Hornsby, Rishsaw and Pat Patterson are all big time football players. Barksdale and Hornsby are better than any DBs we have. Rishaw would have started last year if not for rules violations and Pat Patterson is big, fast and has great hands. That is 4 starters out of 22 (almost 20%) not on the team due to discipline problems. Throw in all the playmakers that graduated in particular Dexter and Shay on offense and Tony Fein and Hardy on defense and what you have left is a young team with mediocre talent and a coaching staff that has not yet adjusted to that talent. In terms of the future, we need big OL that can block if Stanley is going to have a prayer at QB. Otherwise, our future franchise QB is down in Mobile at South Alabama.
Our OL dictates that we should basically run two offensive plays. Masoli with run, pass, pitch option around right end adn Masoil with run, pass, pitch option around left end. When you cant gain a yard on two tries up the middle against Vanderbilt, it is time to quit kidding yourself that you have inside running game. And with no bona fide SEC caliber WR, we also need to quit kidding ourselves that we can throw from pro set offense. In other words, the only way our WR will get open against SEC defenses is if Masoli creates with his legs. I also dont like the musical chairs at TB position. Bolden and Davis are legit SEC talent. Alternate them if you like but when you bring in three or four more TBs, none of them gets into a groove and a redshirt freshman fumbles the game away.
As for defense, they havent played a solid, 60 minute game since BAMA last year. Since then, we lsot to AUB, got lucky to beat ARK and LSU, lost to Maroons, got lucky that OSU stud WR was out and QB was hurt and have lost to JSU and VU while looking average against TULANE.Like most Reb fans, I am shocked that front 7 cant stop running game or put pressure on passer. That makes life tough for the DBs. Is it NIX, is it the players, is it the scheme? Damnifino.
But before we throw the team and coaches under the bus, let's remember that Eli's senior year started 2-2 before Rebs went on 8-1 streak to finish 10-3 and in Top 15. Except for some real bad luck, we woulda beat LSU, gone 8-0 in SEC and gone to Atlanta. In case you have forgotten, Chris Collins purportedly stepped out of bounds on TD catch wtih nobody within 5 yards of him and the great Jonathan Nichols missed two FG attempts. One of the best football games I have ever seen, even if the Rebs came up short 17-14.
Reality check. OM is #7 out of 12 in SEC league winning percentage. That is who we are. We win West in basketball 3 times in 6 years. We win West in baseball a bunch. But we have yet to win it in football. The best coach we have had since Johnny Vaught was Tuberville and we let him get away. We were lined up to hire Tommy Bowden to replace Tub but Archie said Eli was going to UVA unless we hired Cut. So we hired Cut. Cut went 8-4, 7-6, 7-4 and 10-3 with Eli then 4-7 without him and we fired him. No bona fide coach wanted the job except Dennis Erickson. Khayat said no so we hired Coach O. Terrible head coach- great recruiter- his talent got us two Top 15s and back to back Cotton Bowl champs. Next best coach since Vaught and Tub is definitely Houston Nutt. We might have to suffer through this year and he might have to make change on defensive staff but we got to give him this year and next year before making a change. We will never know but I beleive that this is a much better football team if those 4 knuckleheads had not gotten themselves kicked off the team.

IMHO, what's hurting Ole Miss even more now is the fact that the West is just brutal right now. With Saban, Petrino, Mullen, Miles and even Chizik. These programs seem to be either maintaining or growing( not saying OM isn't but just stating that the West is really difficult). OM can turn it around but, that was easier 2-4 years ago when the West usually had one or two really good/decent teams and the rest average to below average.
Someone has to win/lose each game. But every week is an absolute war. It's so difficult to learn on the fly or try to season players in the SEC. For some reason, it's almost impossible to do so and win.
Nutt and has staff are in a program shaping year right now. They need to weather the storm and build a program rather than a season IMO. If that happens, OM will change its course of recent history.

Nutt should have started shaping the program the first year he got here. Not the third.
The bottom line is college football is a business. Nutt gets paid $2.5 million a year. He is the 13th highest paid coach, so we have to expect to be the 13th ranked team in the nation or better year in and year out. There is no reshaping in college football. Saban lost half of his defense and he isn't "reshaping".
Nutt wanted a raise when he did well, so he should be on the hot seat if he doesn't. An under 500 season is inexcusable for $2.5 million a year. If he were to make a million less a year, it would be ok. If there aren't fans in the seats to pay his salary then there is no need to keep him around. And there were PLENTY of open seats for the Vandy game. Either step up and win and make us a winning team this season, or go away. He needs to earn his salary.

I agree. It is all about recruiting and building a program from that. If you are getting paid to do that then do it. If that means hiring coaches that can do it then do that also. Losing will happen to all teams at some point. Fans will only put up with it for a very short while. When the seats get empty the administration get ancy. Nutt should be starting his players now not O's. Can he coach? Not unless he gets quality SEC type players. The level of play this year may not be up to par across the board in the SEC but it will be next year as the major schools reload. Teams like Ole Miss and Arkansas can't afford to take a step backward or they will become the Vandys of the West.

Was foreshadowing the rest of the season would extremely difficult based on what's happened so far. A team like UNC can somewhat weather the storm this season in a rather weak ACC. Also, they (along with the rest of the west) is going to have to be flawless from here on out. The West will continue to be unforgiving.
