* Jason Cook, Michael Oher calling out the Ole Miss fans: These two seniors had some harsh words for the Ole Miss fans, saying they know there are some that come to home games at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium to cheer for the team, but others that are there for "the cocktail party" (Not my words — they were Cook's). Anyway, the subject came up because we asked them why the team seems to play better on the road. Cook and Oher both said it's because they feed off the negative energy on the road, and it's hard to replicate that at home because the atmosphere is not as intense. Disclaimer: Cook did mention that as players, it's their job to produce no matter what the crowd is like, so he wasn't completely putting it on the fans.

I'm glad somebody said it. The team needs to call out the fans. I've actually been to a game where a lady in front of me asked me not to yell so much or so loud. The nerve of me, screaming for my team AT the game, IN the stadium. What was I thinking?

Yea I had about the same thing. But it was with standing up. With her not being able to see sitting down the entire game.cajunrebel wrote:I'm glad somebody said it. I'm going to start wearing a t-shirt that says "get off your *ss" on the back so I won't hear that comment anymore. Who sits the whole game anyway??Goroth wrote:Yea I had about the same thing. Excellent point LCW. If people would show the same amount of enthusiasm and excitement in Vaught as they did the Grove, we'd be as loud as Florida and lsux. Maybe we should start shutting the grove down during the game.LCW wrote:I would as well. Get out of the Grove and into the stands and make some noise, wouldja?

You don't throw the baby out with the bath water...I know lots of folks who might not make the game if the Grove weren't there for their spouse or others to hang in while they are at the game.
I think that Cook called the fans out just right, without insulting them or badmouthing the Grove.
Having said that....a lack of screaming fans did not cause Dexter to fumble against Vandy or Jevan to throw the int's. As a matter of fact, Parrot and I and the entire east side of the stadium were yelling so loudly maybe we distracted him and made him fumble. 8)

Sorry, I can't buy this it's the fans fault. A team should be able to perform it's best at home regardless of the crowd. The problem is the coaching getting them prepared for a home game. The coaches and players are responsible, not the crowd. Tennessee has a rowdy and loud crowd and look how good they are this year. I call bull *beep* on this one, sorry Jason Cook, try another angle.

Fans need to do more than sit in seats, Cook said.
“In my years here, you’ve had what boils down to two groups of fans. You’re going to have your fans who are really about the game and your fans who are there for the social atmosphere, the cocktail party so to speak,” he said. “Now I’m not saying that’s the reason we don’t win games, not at all, because we’re the ones making plays on the field, the ones sweating and bleeding.
“But it means a lot when your fans are behind you the entire time on every play screaming for you as opposed to just enjoying themselves.”
'We owe our fans'
“We feel like we owe our fans a ballgame, 60 minutes,” Nutt said. “We’ve let games slip away here. We want to play good here.”
Ole Miss is 2-13 in its last 15 games against Auburn. Both wins, in 1999 and 2003, were at Auburn.
“I’ve been looking forward to this game since we had a chance to win down there,” Oher said. “Personally, we have to come to play and be into the game, period, but it helps when it’s everybody together.”
They are not blaming the fans, just asking for a little support. Not too much to expect, and even less to ask for from your fans. Who is that considers their crowd a "12th Man"? T-Tech or.....well some Tx school anyway. Could be the start of a new tradition.. The VH Blues can be deadly, no?

I personally think that every student should be required to come up with original face/body paint and scream until they lose their voices.
I can see "Team Spirit" being an elective where the real students fans can earn an easy A on three semester hours.

Why does the team play better on the road?

You've just got to learn from the wrong things you've done. I came off the rebound, started looking around, figured out it's time to have a little fun.
They are young and emotion is a major factor. When you get mature you play because it is your duty. That is the difference between a team of Frosh and Sophomores and one with veteran leadership.parrotreb wrote:Why does the team play better on the road?
